No helmets: Women offenders to be prosecuted from September 10
|NEW DELHI: The traffic cops will finally start prosecuting women for not wearing helmets from September 10.
Police said that a team of women officers have been trained to spot offenders.
Earlier, a 15-day deadline was issued following an order by the transport department which made helmets compulsory for women.
However, helmet dealers say that despite the order, there is just a marginal increase in the sale of helmets for women.
“These helmets also fit perfectly on women wearing a hair bun or a ponytail, you can even have custom made designs made on them,” said Abhinav Jain, a helmet seller. But he could not guarantee the level of protection these helmets provide.
Meanwhile traffic officials added that they would also be challenging riders who do not conform to the BIS standards and a dedicated team will be deployed to check this.
“We will crackdown on any one found to be travelling without a proper helmet. Apart from issuing a challan to the violators, we will also educate them about the features of a standard helmet,” said Anil Shukla, joint commissioner, traffic.
